Start a tutoring prep service with AI (a subject you already know)
Tutoring is one of the oldest first-income jobs. Free AI plans do not replace knowing the subject, but they cut preparation time: practice questions, simpler explanations and one-page summaries that you check before every session.
This fits students and recent graduates looking for a first income, people reinventing after a layoff who can teach their trade or language, and anyone with a subject they can explain well.
Step 1. Pick one subject and one level (20 minutes)
Choose something you can teach without AI: for example secondary-school math, English conversation, Excel basics or a programming language. One subject, one level, one format (online or in person), one price per hour that you set.
Ask the assistant: “Rewrite this tutoring offer so a busy parent understands it in 10 seconds: [your offer]. Friendly, short, no promises of better grades.” Then edit it by hand.
Step 2. Prepare each session in 15 minutes
- Ask what is next. Before the session, ask the student (or parent) which topic is coming up and what they find hard. Never ask for graded assignments to complete.
- Draft practice. “Write 8 practice questions on [topic] for [level], from easy to hard, with step-by-step solutions on a separate list. Do not use names or personal details.”
- Check everything. Solve every question yourself. AI assistants make calculation and fact errors; delete anything you cannot verify.
- Work from their own material. With the student's permission, upload their class notes (not personal data) to NotebookLM and ask for a one-page summary or quiz grounded in those notes, so you teach what their class actually covers.
- Make it printable. Lay out the worksheet in Canva Free, or turn it into a few slides with Gamma's free credits.
- Log progress. After each session write three lines: what you covered, what still needs work, what is next. That log is what keeps families booking.

Step 3. Your first 5 students
- Two practice students. Offer two free sessions to people you know (a younger cousin, a neighbour's child with a parent's OK, a colleague learning Excel) in exchange for honest feedback.
- Ask where families already look. Local school or community notice boards and neighbourhood groups, following each group's rules on promotion.
- One simple message. “Hi, I'm [name]. I tutor [subject] for [level], online or [place]. I prepare practice for each session and check every answer myself. [price] per hour, first session [free or price]. Want to try one?”
- Count. Write down asks, replies, students and money in. After 5 students, keep, change or drop the offer.
Honesty and safety checklist
- Only teach subjects you can verify yourself; AI is for preparation, not for knowing the answer.
- Never do homework, graded work or exams for a student, and respect the school's rules on AI.
- With anyone under 18, agree price, schedule, place and contact with a parent or guardian first.
- Keep students' personal details out of free AI accounts.
- Tell families you use AI tools to prepare, and never promise better grades, passed exams or income.
FAQ
Can I start tutoring with AI and no money?
Yes, if you already know the subject well. Free ChatGPT and Claude plans draft practice questions and explanations, NotebookLM's free Standard plan works from the student's own notes, and Canva Free or Gamma's 400 one-time free credits make worksheets or short slides. Free limits change, so check each official page.
Is it cheating to use AI for tutoring?
Not when the AI helps you prepare and the student does the thinking. Never use it to do homework, graded work or exams for the student, and follow the school's rules on AI. Your job is practice and explanation, not answers to hand in.
Can I trust AI answers for math or science?
No, not without checking. AI assistants can make calculation and fact errors. Work every practice problem yourself before the session, and only teach topics you can verify on your own.
What if the student is under 18?
Agree everything with a parent or guardian first: price, schedule, where sessions happen and how you contact the student. Keep sessions online or in a place the parent approves, and never paste a student's name, school or grades into a free AI account.
