First income with AI: a free, honest plan for young people
Short answer: AI does not pay you; people do. Pick one small job that local people already pay for (social posts for a shop, a flyer, tidy documents, simple translations), use a free chat assistant (ChatGPT or Claude) to draft, Canva Free to design and Grammarly Free to polish, and check every result yourself. Then ask 15 people you can actually reach. Tool facts come from the Whichora directory, checked 2026-10-16.

Before you start: age and rules
Check each tool's minimum age in its terms, and your country's rules on work, receiving payments and taxes for your age. If you are under 18, tell a parent or guardian and let them help with payments. This is not legal or tax advice.
Step 1. Pick one service (20 minutes)
Write what you are good at (phone photos, writing, languages, design, organising, social media) and who you can reach (family, neighbours, local shops, your school or club). Then paste it into a free chat assistant:
“I am [age] and good at […]. I can reach [people/places]. List 8 small services a local shop or neighbour would pay for, that I can deliver in under 3 hours with free tools. For each: who pays, what they get, what I need to learn. No income estimates.”
Keep the one you could deliver this week, to people you can actually talk to.
Five first services that fit free plans
- Social posts for a local shop: a week of captions and simple images. AI drafts, you match the shop's voice and photos.
- Flyers and price lists: Canva Free for layout, AI for the wording.
- Tidy documents: turn messy notes into a clean menu, schedule or form.
- Simple translations between languages you actually speak; AI drafts, you check meaning.
- Tutoring help: practice questions and summaries for younger students, checked by you.
Pick by job
| Job | Tool | Free plan, per the directory | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service ideas, offer wording, first drafts | ChatGPT | Free tier with limits on uploads, images, voice and research | pricing |
| Longer texts: a short bio, simple proposal, checking your work | Claude | Free chat with web search, files and Artifacts | pricing |
| Flyer, price list, social posts for a client | Canva | Canva Free; Magic Studio features with plan-based AI limits | pricing |
| Polishing messages to neighbours and shop owners | Grammarly | USD 0 plan: basic grammar and spelling, 100 AI prompts a month | plans |
Free limits change. Do not pay for any tool until paying clients make it worth it.
Step 2. A 21-day route to 3 paid jobs
- Days 1 to 3, make a sample. Do one free example for someone you know (a flyer or a week of posts) and ask for honest feedback and permission to show it.
- Days 4 to 7, write your offer. One sentence, what is included, price, turnaround. Ask the AI: “Rewrite this offer so a shop owner understands it in 10 seconds. Friendly and very short. No exaggerated claims.”
- Days 8 to 14, ask 15 people. In person beats online for local shops. Follow up once, politely.
- Days 15 to 21, deliver and count. Deliver on time, ask for feedback and one referral, and write down asks, replies, jobs and money in. Keep, change or switch the service.
A first message to adapt: “Hi, I'm [name] from [area]. I make [flyers/social posts] for local shops. Here's one I made for [example]. Could I make one for you for [price]? If you don't like it, you don't pay.” Edit it by hand.
Honesty checklist
- Tell clients you use AI tools and that you check everything yourself.
- No invented reviews, results or experience. Show only real samples, with permission.
- Do not use other people's photos, logos or music without permission.
- Do not paste clients' private details into an AI tool unless you have read its privacy settings; use placeholders.
- Never pay to "unlock" earnings. Real clients pay you, not the other way round.
FAQ
Can a teenager make money with AI?
Yes, by selling simple help to people nearby, such as social posts for a shop, flyers or tidy documents, with AI drafting and you checking. AI does not earn money by itself; the money comes from people who trust you to do a job.
Do I need to pay for AI tools to start?
No. Free plans of ChatGPT or Claude, Canva Free and Grammarly Free (100 AI prompts a month) are enough for a first service. Free limits change, so check each official page.
Am I old enough to use these tools and get paid?
Check two things first: each tool's minimum age in its terms, and your country's rules on work, payments and taxes for your age. If you are under 18, involve a parent or guardian. Whichora does not give legal or tax advice.
What should I charge for my first job?
Start with a small, clearly stated price for a small job, ask local people what similar help costs, and raise it once you have examples and feedback. Never promise results you cannot control.
